JOEL is a senior leader in the creative industries. Here’s what he had to say about being part of the do good and do well experience.

I decided that I wanted to make a big change in both my professional and personal life and knew I needed some help to do this.

I had felt stuck for some time personally in my work and I think I knew it was a time to face it. The pandemic gave me space to reflect on all aspects of my life so this time allowed me some time to breathe and consider what I needed. A previous one-off coaching session with Sarah really helped me know this was the way I could make a big change.

I was concerned that maybe I wouldn’t be entirely honest in sessions or not brave enough to be vulnerable. I also was concerned about whether I would get the value out of the sessions and was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford the sessions - but made sacrifices as I felt it was important to invest in.

I never imagined that by the end of the programme I would have made a huge life change by changing my job. I never expected that I would be brave enough to do that.

The experience helped me to value my own skills and remove the fear of appearing arrogant by saying what I’m good at. My biggest takeaway though was that ‘being selfish’ can also be used to help others. Often, I think as a changemaker, our focus is on kindness directed towards others at the expense of kindness towards ourselves.

I have a new network of people who I respect and admire –- knowing that I can draw on them (and they can draw on me) for support and guidance.

And I’ve got into new habits, for example, not rushing into completing tasks. I now take time to consider the way I want to do things instead of just doing! I also take more time to look after myself - physically and mentally – for instance I have formed a habit of a digital switch off after I realised that the excess of information was really detrimental to my mental health.

I loved the platforms and tech that made the programme really easy to navigate and use, and having all the resources in one place is fantastic. The podcast (I know not strictly part of the programme) is brilliant! There were so many great individual tasks that I can’t list them all! I have shared many of them with colleagues and friends when they discussed challenges in the work places, and people have seen a change in my approach and attitude.

I couldn’t recommend the experience more! Sarah has been a huge part of me being able to make a positive change in my life. After feeling stuck and lost I was able to use the techniques to really assess what was important to me. The tools I was given through the programme I will take through the rest of my personal and professional life. I am so glad to have met her – she’s fantastic!
